Ecommerce Business Trends in Australia – What the Industry Has To Say

Ecommerce Business Trends in Australia – What the Industry Has To Say

October 10, 2015 eCommerce

The ecommerce industry says that the amount people spend online is heading in just one direction and that is upwards. If you own an ecommerce business in Australia, it is time to ask yourself if your business is going the way you had planned. If it isn’t, then it means that you are not following the top ecommerce business trends in Australia.

The fact is that the retail industry has gone through several changes, and is on the verge of a new ecommerce era. The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the net income from internet sales between 2011 and 2012 was approximately $237 billion, which is a big achievement. As an increasing number of people are choosing online retail stores to shop for their goods, competition between various players in the industry continues to grow. Therefore, your best shot is to follow the latest trends and lead the market.

Here’s a list of the latest ecommerce business trends to follow in Australia, based on the behaviours of the ecommerce customers in the country.

Trend 1: Brand Trust Prevails Over Price

Australian customers are attracted towards brands more than prices. Although price plays an important role, brand names outweigh the price in the case of most items, like appliances, house ware, fashion and cosmetics, etc. If your business offers products by a famous brand; then you can be sure that your customer base will increase. The challenge for every online business is to attract a larger audience, which is where branding plays an important role. Therefore, know your target audience and know what will entice them.

Trend 2: Winners and Losers

Online retailers belong to two camps; they are either winner or losers. That is, they are either selling commoditised goods in huge numbers, or are selling rare and valuable niche products but without huge success (in small numbers). According to a survey, the most successful online ecommerce businesses in Australia include appliances and home ware businesses, departmental stores and variety stores, fashion businesses, and media related businesses (that sell books, DVDs, and CDs). Groceries stores are also taking a lead in the ecommerce industry in recent days.

Trend 3: Mobile e-Commerce

This new trend allows anyone in Australia to shop from anywhere, at anytime. By the end of 2017, this new trend will lead to an increase in ecommerce sales by 35% each year. Therefore, there will be approximately 450 million users of mobile ecommerce by 2017.

Trend 4: Personalised Experiences

A personalised shopping experience is the key to convince customers that they are important to your business. Study the likes and behaviors of your customers and send them personal messages to inform them about things that interest them. Facebook has adopted this new trend too. Moreover, allowing customers to express their likes and dislikes and making changes to suit them is important.

Since the competition between leading ecommerce stores in Australia is very high, following the latest trends is very necessary for small and new ecommerce businesses. You can be sure to capture the Australian ecommerce market by following these trends too.
